India will assist Mauritius in launching a satellite, as announced during External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar’s visit to the country. A project plan has been formalized through a document exchanged between India’s ISRO and Mauritius’ MRIC. Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, alongside Dr. Jaishankar, highlighted that the collaboration includes a signed MoU for joint satellite development. This satellite will provide multispectral imagery, offering precise data for monitoring land and sea surfaces. PM Jugnauth emphasized that this initiative will enhance data sharing between the two countries.
Additionally, an India-Mauritius space portal is being developed to offer valuable services. India’s support extends beyond Mauritius, also assisting other nations like Bhutan with space capacity building.
During Dr. Jaishankar’s visit, 12 Indian-supported projects in education, healthcare, public amenities, and sports were virtually inaugurated, with eight more set to open in Rodrigues and Agalega in the coming months. The Indian minister also visited the site of the Civil Service College project in Réduit and praised the Indian workers involved.
On the Chagos Archipelago issue, Dr. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s support for Mauritius’ claim, aligning with its stance on decolonization and sovereignty. The Chagos Archipelago is currently under British administration, which has been deemed unlawful by the International Court of Justice and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. PM Jugnauth expressed gratitude for India’s steadfast support in Mauritius’ ongoing decolonization efforts.
