Rwanda’s current President, Paul Kagame, appears set to secure a fourth term in office with a commanding lead in the ongoing election, according to partial results released by the National Electoral Commission. As of now, Kagame has garnered 7,099,810 votes, which constitutes 99.15% of the votes counted so far. His closest rival, Habineza Frank, has secured 38,301 votes (0.53%), while Mfayimana Philippe trails with 22,753 votes (0.32%). The electoral process is ongoing, with 78.94% of the votes tallied as of the latest update.
Diane Rwigara, a vocal critic of the president, was barred from participating in the election, a decision also upheld in 2017. Under Rwanda’s electoral laws, the National Electoral Commission has until July 27 to finalize and announce the official results of both the presidential and parliamentary elections, with provisional results due by July 20.
Paul Kagame has been a dominant figure in Rwandan politics since assuming the presidency in 2000, following his leadership role in ending the 1994 genocide. He has consistently secured overwhelming victories in each election, including a notable 99% in the 2017 election.
