Khalif Kairo provides three reasons why Generation Z should avoid participating in street protests today.

Businessman Khalif Kairo is advising the youth to avoid participating in street protests today. In a video shared on his social media, Kairo argues that many of the demands made by Generation Z have already been addressed by President William Ruto and his Kenyan Kwanza regime.

However, his video has caused some backlash among his followers. Many reminded him that he had promised not to comment on the ongoing protests, and some suggested he should refrain from commenting because he no longer supports the youth’s cause.

Kairo outlined three reasons why the youth should avoid the streets. First, he believes most of the objectives have been achieved, citing the withdrawal of the finance bill, the resignation of the entire Cabinet and IG Koome, and the return of the Kazi Mtaani program.

Secondly, Kairo expressed concern that not everyone participating in the protests is genuine. He highlighted the risk to business owners in Nairobi’s CBD, noting that the police cannot fully control the situation, leading to potential looting and casualties.

Finally, Kairo argued that calls for President Ruto’s resignation would not solve the country’s problems, suggesting that even if Ruto resigned, his successors would not be saints. He emphasized the need for a clear plan, such as recalling MPs or waiting for elections to enact change. Kairo advised that the protests only risk the country’s stability and economy.

On the other hand, Human Rights activist Boniface Mwangi stated that today’s protests aim to pressure the government to take accountability for lives lost in previous protests. Mwangi confirmed that peaceful protests would continue until the government takes responsibility for the deceased protesters, noting that the government acknowledged 25 deaths, while the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported 41 deaths and 360 injuries.

Reactions to Kairo’s warning included:

  • wanjikustephens: “What about the appropriation bill that has already been signed? Personally, I’ll be in the streets tomorrow.”
  • f.i.n.i.l.e.e.y: “Be a man of your word; you said you wouldn’t talk about the protests!”
  • shiks_gaks: “Khalif, please, with all due respect, just keep off as you said.”
  • baby_b.oss: “If we had stopped going when you first told us, Kipchumba Murkomen would still be CS.”
  • thequeenwangui: “I thought you said you wouldn’t comment on anything related to protests.”
  • aminmohamednur: “Stop your nonsense; if you’re not going, stay quiet.”
  • unko_juu: “This boy loves attention, seriously.”
  • missrandy_dubairealtor: “My love, you said you wouldn’t talk about this anymore, and now you’re back at it.”
  • pasco_pavani: “You were the first to say you didn’t care if you died. Suddenly, you’ve changed your tune. You love attention. Let those who want to fight do so; focus on your hustle.”
