Gor Mahia, the Kenyan Premier League champions, are facing potential elimination from the ongoing 2024 Kagame Cecafa tournament. This comes after they drew 1-1 against ASAS Djibouti Telecom in a Group B match at Azam Complex Stadium on Saturday night. Levin Odhiambo scored for Gor Mahia in the 40th minute, but Warsama Houssein equalized for Djibouti Telecom just two minutes later.
The draw leaves Gor Mahia in a precarious position, having previously lost 1-0 to Red Arrows from Zambia. They now must win their final Group B match against Sudan Premier League giants Al Hilal on Tuesday to have a chance at qualifying for the semifinals.
This match against ASAS Djibouti Telecom was the second encounter between Gor Mahia and the Djibouti side, with Gor Mahia having defeated them 3-1 in the preliminary rounds in Tanzania back in 2015, a tournament where they reached the finals but lost 2-0 to Tanzania’s Azam FC.
Left-back Levin Odhiambo, who scored for Gor Mahia in this recent match, expressed disappointment at not securing a win but remains hopeful about their chances against Al Hilal.
Meanwhile, Al Hilal, currently at the top of the table, secured their spot in the semifinals with a convincing 5-0 win over Red Arrows. Gor Mahia is third in the table with one point, while Red Arrows are second with three points. Djibouti Telecom is at the bottom with one point.
Gor Mahia’s new coach, Leonardo Neiva, emphasized that the team is still developing under his guidance, with several new players needing time to integrate. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic about their upcoming match against Al Hilal and their preparations for the CAF Champions League against Sudanese side Al Merrikh in the Preliminary Round on August 24, 2024.
