Film producer Abel Mutua has echoed the sentiments expressed by many members of Generation Z regarding the older generation’s role in elections. Abel addressed this issue on his YouTube platform, emphasizing, “When election dates are announced, please let us know where you want to go for vacation. We’ll pay for it. We don’t want to see you at the polling stations.”
There’s a running joke among Gen Z that they might hide their parents’ IDs to prevent them from voting. “It’s because you’ve repeatedly shown that you can’t be trusted. Our parents have disappointed us.”
Under the Constitution of Kenya (2010), every citizen is guaranteed the right to vote. Article 38 asserts:
- Citizens are free to make political choices.
- Every citizen has the right to participate in free, fair, and regular elections based on universal suffrage and the expression of the will of the voters.
- Every adult citizen has the right, without unreasonable restrictions, to register as a voter and cast their vote by secret ballot in any election or referendum.
Abel continued his critique, lamenting, “Just the other day, your children were in Parliament fighting for your rights, and now we see you cheering someone else. How much were you paid? It’s foolishness.”
The next General Election in Kenya is expected in 2027. “We haven’t even buried those who died in Parliament, and I see elderly people carrying clubs in the streets. Are you out of your mind? I swear to God, on election day, we’ll keep you busy. You go on vacation while we manage the country.”
“Let us handle everything because you’ve repeatedly shown that you neither understand nor care about our country’s affairs. How many times will you fall for lies? You are our elders.”
