Drama unfolded in Kirinyaga on Wednesday night in the Ngurubani area of Mwea when a stepmother threw a seven-year-old boy into the Thiba River.
According to Faith Wanjiru, a Soweto village elder, the suspect approached the Thiba River bridge, held her stepson’s hand, and then threw him into the water.
“We couldn’t believe it when the woman threw the boy into the river and ran,” Wanjiru told Inooro TV. Residents who witnessed the incident from across the road struggled to help the boy, who was crying for help.
“The boy was crying for help from his stepmother, saying he thought she was taking him to have supper at a local hotel,” said John Kinyua, a witness.
The boy’s father, Dennis Musili, who arrived shortly after being called by the residents, said he had left the boy with his stepmother and given her money to buy supper.
“I married her two years ago after separating from my wife. I wonder why she wanted to kill the boy by throwing him into the Thiba River,” Musili said. He also mentioned that his son is in Grade 2.
“We have taken the boy to a local private hospital, and he is out of danger. I will take him to my house since I have no other children, while the police continue searching for the woman,” added Faith Wanjiru, the village elder.
