Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna responded to critics of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s decision to engage in national dialogue with President William Ruto, stating in an interview with the Standard that Raila represents a specific constituency within ODM, not necessarily all Kenyans or Gen Z. Sifuna emphasized that Raila leads a party with its own members and supporters, whom he intends to represent during the dialogue announced by Ruto.
“Raila isn’t representing Gen Z. They’ve declared themselves leaderless, and Raila isn’t their leader. But within ODM, there are people Baba (Raila) leads. Not everyone is without a leader or party. I lead a party, and I’m its Secretary General,” said Sifuna. He clarified that Raila’s role in the dialogue pertains to those affiliated with ODM, countering criticisms that Raila’s engagement with Ruto undermines calls for change and better leadership.
Criticism of Raila intensified following his agreement with Ruto on a six-day dialogue, particularly from Kenyans disillusioned with Ruto’s administration and expecting opposition support. The recent protests against Ruto’s policies, notably the Finance Bill 2024, which triggered deadly demonstrations, reflect widespread dissatisfaction with government actions amid economic challenges.
