President William Ruto has announced that the planned recruitment of additional teachers for this year will not proceed due to budgetary constraints following the withdrawal of the Finance Bill, 2024.
“I had a plan to employ 20,000 teachers this year, but I am suspending it until next year when we can reassess how our economy is doing,” Ruto stated.
However, he reassured the 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers that they would be confirmed as previously agreed.
“I want to tell all JSS teachers that despite the challenges we have with the Finance Bill, we are going to make sure that we confirm them this year,” he said.
According to the President, it is important for the teachers to work with the assurance that they will be employed under permanent and pensionable terms as agreed.
The government has planned to fully employ the JSS teachers, who are currently in internships, at a cost of Sh18.3 billion.
The withdrawal of the Finance Bill has created a budget deficit of Sh346 billion, but Ruto mentioned that the government would not borrow the entire amount, only Sh169 billion. He made these remarks on Wednesday while officially opening the Kimuka power substation in Kajiado West.
Additionally, Ruto mentioned that 20,000 more households in Kajiado would be connected to the power grid this year.
