We Are Ending Bursaries: Lurambi MP Titus Khamala Announces Decision
Over the weekend, Lurambi Member of Parliament Titus Khamala announced that legislators have collectively decided to stop disbursing bursaries to students. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MP cited significant backlash regarding the management of these funds as the primary reason for this decision.
Khamala specifically blamed Generation Z for the criticism, noting that they had labeled MPs as “MPigs” due to perceived greed. He stated, “As MPs, we have spoken in one voice about the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) which is causing us problems. We are being insulted and called MPigs. To end it and to make Gen Z happy, we have decided to stop the bursaries that go to Gen Z. Prepare yourselves for life without bursaries.”
The MP pointed out that only Generation Z benefited from the bursaries and expressed disappointment at their criticism. Moving forward, he indicated that students needing financial assistance would have to seek help from the Minister of Education, Ezekiel Machogu, visit their respective county offices, or apply for loans through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
Khamala’s remarks followed reports that the National Government-Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Act is being amended to remove MPs from the fund’s implementation structures.
