St Joseph’s Boys Kitale and Wiyeta Girls emerged as champions in the Trans Nzoia County Secondary Schools football tournament.
Coached by Cosmas Nabungolo, St Joseph’s defeated the reigning national champions, St Anthony Boys Kitale (also known as Solidarity Boys), with a score of 2-0. This victory marked a significant turnaround for St Joseph’s, nicknamed JOBO, who halted their opponent’s 16-year reign as champions.
The final match, held at Kipkeipkei Boys High School in Cherangany, saw St Joseph’s dominate the game in front of a large crowd of soccer enthusiasts. Striker Simiyu Wekesa opened the scoring in the 35th minute of the first half with a well-executed goal. In the second half, JOBO maintained their lead and intensified their offensive, missing several scoring opportunities.
Elkin Simiyu sealed the victory with a goal in the 78th minute, but the match was disrupted in the 89th minute when Solidarity fans entered the field in protest, leading to the game being called off.
Meanwhile, Wiyeta Girls secured their victory with a lone goal against St Joseph’s Girls, earning them a spot in the regional competition scheduled for Bomet, starting July 16th.
Solidarity Boys had represented Kenya at the East and Central Regional Secondary Schools competitions held in Kigali, Rwanda, last year.
