Azimio leaders Raila Odinga and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka joined President William Ruto as he signed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Bill. The ceremony took place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), a departure from previous signings at State House. The Bill is a significant outcome of the National Dialogue Committee talks and marks a key step in implementing electoral reforms.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Attorney General Justin Muturi, and other senior state officials also attended the event. From the Opposition, National Assembly minority leader Opiyo Wandayi, ODM deputy party leaders Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya were present.
President Ruto had earlier invited leaders from various political factions, both parliamentary and non-parliamentary, to participate in this historic occasion. The new law establishes the framework for the country’s electoral management system and sets the stage for the appointment of new IEBC commissioners.
The signing comes amid public pressure and calls from opposition leaders and clergy for the President to enact the Bill to facilitate the reconstitution of the electoral agency.
