Kenyan police commander Godfrey Otunge has stressed the critical nature of their mission in Haiti, asserting that failure is not an option. Speaking at his first press conference since their arrival two weeks ago, Otunge expressed confidence in their mission’s success with the support of local residents.
The address coincided with the Haitian National Police (PNH) regaining control of the State University Hospital of Haiti (HUEH) after weeks of instability. Collaborating closely with local authorities, the Kenyan team has been actively involved in securing strategic locations, including the hospital.
Otunge reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace and order in Haiti, emphasizing their mandate’s importance under a UN resolution. He highlighted their role in supporting local police operations against gangs, aiming to improve security conditions and address various criminal activities.
The multinational force, which includes officers from Kenya and other countries, is working under strict rules of engagement to combat the armed gangs that have plagued Haiti’s capital. Otunge underscored their adherence to international and local laws while appealing for cooperation from the Haitian community to achieve law and order.
The mission, authorized by the UN Security Council, involves a coordinated effort to stabilize Haiti and facilitate free and fair elections. Additional contingents are expected to join in the coming days as part of the broader international effort to restore security across the country.
