Former Defense CS Eugene Wamalwa has rejected the recent calls by President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga for a new national dialogue. In a post on X, Wamalwa responded to the calls, stating, “I am not boarding!” He becomes the second Azimio-affiliated leader to question the calls after Karua.
Karua also expressed skepticism about the talks, emphasizing that for them to succeed, all parties must approach them with genuine goodwill; otherwise, they risk being futile.
The call for dialogue emerged during the signing of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Amendment Bill, 2024, a significant outcome of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) discussions. Wamalwa, who represented the Opposition in NADCO talks, did not endorse the final report but maintains his alignment with the Opposition.
Wamalwa criticized the NADCO report, arguing that it failed to adequately address the most pressing issue for Kenyans—the cost of living. He emphasized that he did not sign the NADCO report nor accept any allowances related to his participation, believing it did not serve the interests of Kenyans.
President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila agreed to initiate a six-day multi-sectoral forum starting on Monday, July 15, aimed at fostering national dialogue and finding lasting solutions to Kenya’s challenges. Ruto underscored the forum’s significance in charting the country’s way forward, while Raila emphasized its role in providing a platform for Kenyans to voice their concerns and achieve lasting solutions.
