DCI Launches Investigation into Claims by 92-Year-Old Man About Tom Mboya’s Assassination
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an investigation following a viral story involving a 92-year-old resident of Embu County who claimed to have purchased the pistol used in the assassination of Tom Mboya, a renowned Kenyan statesman and the late Minister for Economic Development and National Planning.
In an interview, the elderly man, identified as Muruathika, alleged that Mboya’s intent to exert control and destabilize the Mau Mau movement led to the decision to eliminate him. “They organized how this man would be killed, but I was not told where the instructions came from. When they organized how to kill Mboya, I organized how I was going to escape and go home so that when he was shot, I was not there. I am the one who went for the guns at the Somali border,” Muruathika recounted.
Reflecting on the past, Muruathika claimed to have been among the three hitmen tasked with trailing Tom Mboya. The DCI stated, “The article reports that a 92-year-old man purchased the pistol used in the killing of Tom Mboya, a trade unionist, educator, Pan-Africanist, author, former minister, and statesman. The DCI has initiated an investigation and necessary action will be taken once the investigation is complete.”
The assassination of Thomas Joseph Mboya on July 5, 1969, remains one of Kenya’s most enigmatic murders. The DCI aims to verify the authenticity of these claims and uncover any new evidence related to this historic case.
