Why Gen Z Protests Are a Blessing in Disguise for Ruto.

President William Ruto has an opportunity to transform the current revolt against him into a strategic advantage by implementing sweeping changes within his administration to address public dissatisfaction.

The widespread public discontent and nationwide protests led by youth activists could serve as a pivotal moment for President Ruto to cleanse his government, particularly in the fight against corruption.

University Professor Gitile Naituli believes that President Ruto can capitalize on the protests from Generation Z to defy his critics and reshape his legacy positively.

“This is a golden opportunity for President Ruto to establish a lasting legacy and potentially become Kenya’s most transformative leader,” Naituli told the Star.

Naituli emphasized that Ruto could leverage the current situation to streamline his cabinet, enhance efficiency, and intensify efforts against corruption.

There are indications that President Ruto might use this moment to remove some of his allies from key government positions, which had sparked public outcry due to concerns about incompetence.

Previously, such a radical purge would have sparked resistance from affected regions, often shielded by tribal affiliations to protect their positions.

Analysts suggest that President Ruto could exploit the demonstrations against his administration to break away from campaign promises made to certain confidants.

Javas Bigambo, a governance analyst, highlighted the urgency for President Ruto to restore public confidence by making decisive moves amid the ongoing discontent.

“The president faces a critical moment where he must assert leadership and purge incompetence while temporarily adopting populist measures,” Bigambo said.

He stressed that Ruto must navigate carefully between his own agenda and public expectations, viewing the current situation as a test of leadership.

President Ruto has already signaled readiness to reduce public sector spending, canceling planned appointments of Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS) due to economic constraints.

“We respect the court’s decision on CAS appointments and acknowledge the economic realities that necessitate restraint,” Ruto stated, emphasizing the need for a sustainable economic environment before expanding the government payroll.

Despite legislative approval, Ruto underscored the importance of fiscal prudence amidst rising economic pressures.
