South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro assured his constituents of his safety amidst backlash over his continued support for the controversial Finance Bill 2024. On Sunday, Osoro shared a video on social media where he was seen interacting with locals in South Mugirango, buying them roasted maize (mahindi choma).
In the video, a passerby asked Osoro if anyone had confronted him about his support for the contentious bill. Osoro responded confidently, “Has anyone messed you up so far?” the resident asked. “Here I’m okay. No one can dare do that to me,” Osoro replied.
In another clip, the National Assembly Chief Whip is seen engaging with youths from his constituency, discussing recent protests and the finance bill. Osoro humorously asked the youths, most of whom are from Generation Z, if they planned to attack him and other leaders who supported the bill. The MP joked that Gen Z is now ruling the country, prompting laughter from the youths who promised to remain peaceful and protect people’s property.
Osoro and over 200 MPs angered many Kenyans by voting in favor of the bill, which led to angry protesters storming Parliament. The protests escalated, resulting in the deaths of 41 people at the hands of the police.
President William Ruto ultimately rejected the bill, stating that his government would need to implement austerity measures to manage its spending. Amidst accusations of punitive taxation and corruption, Ruto has expressed a willingness to address these concerns.
