Ministry of Public Service Suspends Recruitment to Government Jobs After Withdrawal of Finance Bill 2024
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announced on Thursday that the recruitment of staff for government jobs will be suspended. This directive was issued to Public Service Commission (PSC) chairperson Anthony Muchiri as a result of the austerity measures recommended by the National Treasury following the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024.
In a notice to the PSC, CS Kuria explained, “As outlined during the Budget presentation to Parliament on June 13, 2024, this measure is critical in controlling runaway recurrent expenditures and aligning with austerity measures across the government.” Kuria emphasized that this action aligns with the recommendation to reduce the wage bill to 35 percent of revenue, as stipulated by the Public Finance Management Act of 2012.
The Public Finance Management Act of 2012 mandates that the country’s public wage bill should not exceed 35 percent of the national budget. Kuria stated, “Our current expenditure on salaries, allowances, and benefits for public servants exceeds sustainable levels, placing undue strain on our national finances. This hinders our ability to allocate resources towards essential national priorities.”
