“Nothing out of the ordinary!” Kindiki comments on plainclothes police presence during demonstrations.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has defended the use of plainclothes police officers during anti-Finance Bill demonstrations, asserting that wearing a uniform does not define one’s role as a police officer. In a statement on Thursday, Kindiki emphasized that the presence of both uniformed and plainclothes officers is not irregular.

“A police officer’s identity isn’t solely defined by their attire but by their function,” Kindiki stated. He explained that crowd control tactics differ significantly from other police operations like crime prevention due to the nature of engagement required.

Kindiki also highlighted the challenges posed by organized crime amid recent protests, noting, “The methods of crowd control policing are distinct, reflecting the unique dynamics of such encounters. Recent events underscore the sophisticated nature of criminal activities orchestrated by opportunistic elements seeking to destabilize the nation.”

During the demonstrations, plainclothes officers, some armed, were observed deploying tear gas and making arrests, actions Kindiki acknowledged as necessary under the circumstances. He praised the police for their overall management of the situation and for demonstrating restraint amidst pressure.

“Our officers exhibited professionalism despite adversity, with some sustaining injuries in the line of duty,” Kindiki remarked during an interview on Citizen TV. He expressed appreciation for their efforts in upholding law and order during the protests, emphasizing that their actions were conducted within legal bounds.
