Ministry of Education to Centralize All Education Data in New System

Following a meeting with stakeholders at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced that the Ministry of Education will centralize all education data into a new system called the Kenya Education Management System (KEMIS).

During the stakeholder forum, the plans to consolidate the storage and retrieval of education information in the country were discussed. KEMIS aims to integrate data from the National Education Management System (NEMIS), Technical Vocational Education Management Information System (TVET-MIS), and Higher Education Management Information System (HEMIS). This system will enable the tracking of all learners from pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools to middle-level colleges and universities.

“KEMIS is designed to streamline and centralize data at all levels of the national education system,” stated the Ministry of Education. “It will hold information from pre-primary, junior and senior schools, middle-level colleges, and university institutions for planning and policy-making purposes moving forward.”

The implementation of KEMIS follows the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms, which emphasized the importance of capturing data on all learners from basic education institutions. In cases where a learner cannot be registered, such as due to the lack of a national identity card or being over 18 years old, the county director of education will handle each case individually. If the reasons are deemed valid, the learner will be registered on KEMIS.
