Police have acknowledged the arrest of former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter during a dramatic roadside incident in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, after which he was taken to Kamukunji police station. It remains uncertain if he will be presented in court. Authorities justified the dramatic nature of the arrest by stating that Keter allegedly resisted detention.
The event, which was captured on video, shows police investigating Keter for unspecified reasons, although Keter has not commented on the matter. “We attempted a peaceful arrest, but he resisted. He is being investigated for certain allegations,” said an officer involved.
Keter was apprehended after leaving a church event in Kileleshwa, with his family present and heard screaming for help. A passerby recorded the incident, showing armed plainclothes officers pulling Keter from his Toyota V8 Land Cruiser and driving away in a Ford Ranger Double-cabin.
Keter’s handler later posted on Facebook, “Abducted and taken to an unknown destination.”
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Singoei condemned the arrest, saying, “There is a procedure for effecting an arrest. This is not one of them. We must avoid extra-legal means even for legitimate objectives.”
Lawyer Ahmedinasir Abdulahi criticized the arrest, stating, “This is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. This isn’t a lawful process.”
Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua also condemned the incident, questioning why and where Keter was taken, using the hashtag #ReleaseAlfredKeter.
Kanu chairman Gideon Moi commented, “Today, the nation witnessed the abduction of former MP Alfred Keter in Nairobi, part of a disturbing trend of gangland-type kidnappings. This trend threatens the rule of law in Kenya.”
He added, “Since the opposition to oppressive economic policies began, some young people remain missing, held incommunicado, distressing their families.”
“The constitution and laws are clear about arrests: individuals must be informed of the reasons, given legal representation, and presented in court within twenty-four hours.”
“We urge authorities to uphold the rule of law, ensure citizens’ safety, and release anyone being unlawfully held.”
