Karen Nyamu announced a purported deal to provide free tampons to schools, but the company involved has denied any such agreement, labeling it as false.
Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has once again drawn attention following her assertion about securing a partnership with a local tampon manufacturer. Despite previous criticism for her positions on the Finance Bill and her affiliations with President William Ruto, Nyamu appears undeterred by the latest controversy.
On June 30, Nyamu took to Instagram to announce that her foundation had been in discussions with Kotex Kenya to facilitate the distribution of free tampons in schools, particularly targeting those in slum areas.
Her post sparked immediate backlash, with many Kenyans pledging to boycott Kotex products. Critics accused Nyamu of exploiting menstrual health issues to divert attention from her contentious political stances.
In response to the outcry, Kotex issued a statement refuting Nyamu’s claims. The company clarified that it had not engaged in any discussions or agreements with Karen Nyamu or her foundation regarding the supply of tampons.
“Kotex confirms that no discussions or agreements have been made with Karen Nyamu. Any claims of a potential partnership with Kotex are entirely false,” the statement read.
Nyamu quickly reacted to Kotex’s denial, accusing the company of succumbing to pressure and reaffirming that discussions had indeed taken place.
“Kotex Kenya, don’t be cowardly. A few threats and a few hours later, you post this. So what exactly is fake? You met with Enos and Cindy in your offices this week, and we’re just awaiting details on the best discounts you will offer us,” Nyamu wrote in an Instagram story.
She also emphasized that the criticisms on her post stemmed from misunderstandings about tampons, viewing the situation as an opportunity to educate and expand Kotex’s market.
