Public health officials in Kitengela, Kajiado County, have apprehended 12 individuals in a crackdown targeting homeowners accused of illegally dumping untreated sewage, amid fears of a potential Cholera outbreak in the area.
During the operation, officials also confiscated eight water pumping machines used for discharging the sewage. Some homeowners reportedly resisted arrest, prompting the use of force by officers.
Residents in the area have endured these hazardous practices for several months, posing serious health risks. Sewage now flows through areas where food and vegetable stalls are situated, as well as near residential properties, contributing to a heightened foul odor in the streets.
Following the raids, tenants in four of the affected houses have been given a 14-day notice to vacate, in accordance with public health regulations.
The Department of Public Health and Sanitation has issued a stern warning to any officials found colluding with homeowners in the illegal disposal of sewage, emphasizing that they will face legal consequences.
